Surface Analysis

Marking Permanence Testing

Resistance to solvent or marking permanence testing determines a product’s ability to withstand exposure to different solvents. This ensures that the component markings will not become illegible or damaged when being cleaned or handled. In accordance with the MIL-STD-883, Method 2015A, the component’s surface is first exposed to various chemicals and temperatures before being assessed for any abnormalities or evidence of remarking.

Heated Solvent Testing

Heated solvent testing is a more accurate and advanced method of counterfeit detection than a traditional acetone test. Our lab technicians use chemical solvents (1-Methyl 2-Pyrrolidinone and Dynasolve 750) to remove the device’s top layer to reveal signs of resurfacing or remarking including sanding, previous markings, differing body material, blacktopping, or pitting.

Decapsulation

Decapsulation is performed using either mechanical or chemical processes to safely remove the device packaging and expose the internal die without compromising critical structures. Method selection is based on package type and material composition to ensure controlled, precise results.

Once exposed, our lab technicians conduct a detailed internal inspection to verify die markings, manufacturer identifiers, and part numbers. Additional analysis includes die size, placement, orientation, and overall construction. The die is also evaluated for consistency with known authentic samples, as well as any signs of tampering, resurfacing, or prior rework.

This process provides a deeper level of authentication by confirming internal characteristics that cannot be validated through external inspection alone.

Baking

Using a low-heat oven, moisture-sensitive devices are properly baked according to industry standards to remove any moisture. After baking, the components are dry packed to ensure durability and moisture sensitivity levels.

XRF Testing

X-ray fluorescence (XRF) testing is used to determine the elemental composition of component lead materials. This analysis is critical for verifying that plating and base materials align with manufacturer specifications, helping to identify inconsistencies that may indicate counterfeit or improperly processed parts.

In addition to authenticity verification, XRF screening ensures compliance with RoHS and other environmental regulations by detecting the presence of restricted substances such as lead, cadmium, and other hazardous heavy metals.

This testing is essential for confirming material integrity, regulatory compliance, and long-term reliability in demanding applications.

AS9120 and IDEA

All products undergo a comprehensive visual inspection in strict accordance with IDEA-STD-1010-B standards. Using original manufacturer specification sheets as our benchmark, our certified lab technicians meticulously examine each component and its leads for signs of damage, remarking, rework, resurfacing, bends, breaks, or evidence of prior use.

Each inspection includes high-resolution photographic documentation, precise quantity verification, and confirmation of original manufacturer date codes ensuring full traceability and authenticity at every stage.
